小瞎子和兰秀儿之间的爱情，可以视为一段自由恋爱的过程。情窦初开的小瞎子在跟随师傅到野山坳说书的时候，遇到了同样正值豆蔻年华的兰秀儿。两个人在一起听电匣子的过程中，逐渐产生了微妙的感情。从小在山里长大的兰秀儿向往外面的世界，崇拜小瞎子能哼出从外面而来的电匣子里播放的《步步高》、《旱天雷》等曲子，并且偷偷地给小瞎子带鸡蛋吃，在感情的逐渐的升温中，小瞎子和兰秀儿初次尝到了接吻的美妙的滋味。然而，兰秀儿终是远嫁山外，这对于向往山外的兰秀儿而言未尝不是一种另类的解脱，但对于深陷其中的小瞎子而言，绝对是生命中无法承受的晴天霹雳。而这生命中无法承受的沉痛成为推动小瞎子努力弹破一千根弦的最重要的原因。而在希望破灭之后的老瞎子也在此时看透了自己的师傅当初留下这张药方的深意，便用着同样的借口，让小瞎子从自己的手中接过了这张药方。在善意的谎言的背后，蕴含着的是三代人之间的精神的传承和对下一代的鼓励。
在风风雨雨的这五十年里，老瞎子的人生有着有可能出现的众多的人生轨迹，或是早早死亡，或是颓废一生，但就是因为这师傅传给他的一纸药方，使得老瞎子苦苦熬过了五十年的时间老瞎子也全心沉到自己所说的书中去，人人都称赞他那 三弦子弹得讲究，轻轻漫漫的，飘飘洒洒的，疯颠狂放的，那里头有天上的日月，有地上的生灵。，在想要弹破一千根弦治好自己的眼睛的信念支撑下，老瞎子享受到了满足和幸福，与苦中作乐是老瞎子对生命的韧性和坚强的诠释。
